Also, if you look at Megatron's original name "D-16" closely enough, it also resembles the word "dig", which is probably a pun for his assigned career. There was a comic page I saw online from Megatron: Origins I think it was that actually had D-16 printed on his arm I think and that's were I noticed it.

I can hazard a guess about "Omega Spreem". The "Japanese toy designers" theory seems likely. In the Japanese language, nearly every syllable ends with a vowel, making more complex English words difficult. So instead of stretching it out to "Su-pu-ree-mu" to more comfortably fit Japanese dialects, they opted for "Spu-ree-mu".
